Obscure version of Rock On...know it?

I know this is a shot in the dark...but here goes...

There's a version of Rock On (the David Essex song) that I have been looking for, for years. I don't know who did it, and I have very little to go on. I'm hoping somebody here might know who the artist is based upon the scant details I can provide.

* It is not the Michael Damian version.
* Big Clue here: The main instrument used was a Hammond B3*
*The same sound Terry Adams used on NRBQ's "Me & the Boys".
* It was probably released between '86 & '88...definitely NOT after fall of '88. Of this I am sure - I moved across the country in the fall of '88 and took the record with me.
* My copy was a 12" single...a 3:30ish version on side one, and an extended version on side two.
* Liner notes on the cover suggested that the album, from which it came, was a celebration (of sorts) of the Hammond B3.
* I don't think it was on a major label.
* I obtained my copy while working at a radio station in Connecticut...it was a promo copy supplied to the station. I picked it out of the 'freebies' pile by the PDs door...from there it would have been tossed in the trash. The station never aired it...nor did any other station that I know of.
* It was probably a pretty crappy version of the song...the singer just shouted out the lyrics, but the organ riff has stuck in my head all these years.

That's about all I have to offer. Anyone care to take a guess?
Oh...that IS the Hammond B3 I hear on "Me & The Boys"...right?

Suitably strange video of their best known track.

New record due soon, but distribution in the USA seems patchy. They have quite a few online videos, including one of the 'Black Cab Sessions' that should be checked out.

Sound like the bastard daughters of Steeleye Span and CoCoRosie, though they pre-date the latter by a good while. Oh, and warning: vintage guitar pron content on the performances. Generally filed under Folk.

What tracks do you associate (thru how they sound rather than just when they were hits) with Autumn?

3 I'll say off the top of my head:

ABBA - Another Town, Another Train... the mellotron flute and melancholy lyrics just bring to mind an autumn day
ABBA - The Day Before You Came - the imagary and sound seem to paint more a dark blustery autumn night (note that Abba more of less bookended their career with 2 plainitive classics)

ELO - Showdown - Arguably ELO's greatest single moment, the "raining all over the world" lyrics are coloured perfectly by thudering cellos and those drips of Revolution 9-esque mellotron

I'll think of more, let's here some of yours

25 Groovy Tunes From 1964 - Choose Up To 8 Of Your Favorites!

This week I've chosen 25 tunes from the massive vaults of the year 1964. I left out the Beatles and Stones and a few other top ten smashes to concentrate on the other great songs, and it was quite a battle choosing a healthy mix between the pop groups/artists from the UK & USA vs. all the smooth Motown and R&B singles. An amazing year for radio it was, and I heard and loved all of these songs on the same radio station!
Comments welcome, as always, and pick up to 8 of your favorites from the list. Feel free to mention any songs you'd like to have seen that aren't here, there's bound to be some as this is in no way intended to be a "definitive" list that everyone would agree with 100%. Anyway, hope this poll brings back some good memories and you dig some of these classic tracks out and have fun! - John

Dylan's mono Knockin' On Heavens Door - Fold Down from Stereo?

Knockin' On Heaven's Door was released in mono on a few Columbia Hall of Fame 45s (Columbia 4-33259) backed with A Fool Such As I.

In addition, there was a stereo release of the single from it's initial release b/w "Turkey Chase".

Does anyone have the Col. HOF 45? If so, any thoughts on whether this is a dedicated mono mix or simply a fold down of the stereo release?

I believe the initial mono version came out in '74 so I suppose it would be odd to have a unique mono mix for this release, but it's worth checking.

Thanks,
Mike

G'day,

I was listening to my Allman Brothers - Live At Filmore East double LP this morning and the inside cover states "Side 1 and Side 4 are on the first record, Side 2 and Side 3 are on the second record".

So if I want to play the tracks in the order, I've gotta put on record 1 (for side 1), then change to record 2 to play sides 2&3, then flip back to record 1 to play side 4. That's two record changes, whereas if the sides are in order there's only one record change.

I've seen this with other double LPs as well.

Scratching my head trying to figure out why this is done at all.

We all listen on different systems from a $49 ipod mini to $100,000 + systems. My thought is we "color" the sound ourselves (through equipment, speaker placement, room treatments, etc) that a flat transfer of master source should be the goal. If we want more bottom/top end, we usually make our own adjustments. Some systems are warmer some are neutral. No two mastered sources are the same....so we are really more tuned to how our systems sound. You may like Bob Ludwig's masterings out of the box on your McIntosh system. But you may think his masterings sound thin through your headphones. Now, I realize the goal of record companies is to get their music heard (compression, loudness, trendy sound signatures). So when we look at a remastering, are we just asking an engineer to tweak the tone controls at the source level vs ourselves at the output level (stereo systems). Once a flat transfer is made for CD, that should be it until a better resolution medium (ex: BD) is available.

I'm not wanting to start a war with anyone...I'm just asking with all the equipment varieties...is mastering beyond a flat transfer really less relevant?

There have been released two versions of the Pistols' Never Mind the..., Here's the Sex Pistols cardboard sleeve mini LP CD in Japan. One in 1999 (VJCP-68050) and another in 2007 (VJCP-68852). Does anyone know from which masters are these made? From UK Virgin or from the earlier Toshiba TOCP-53098 from the end of the nineties?

I've compared Toshiba TOCP-53098 (downloaded from some torrent site) with the Black Triangle, and they both sound the same (or something is wrong with the files that I've downloaded?). Then I listened to the 1993 Virgin CD version, and it sounds to me just unlistenable being used to that Toshiba sound. Therefore I wonder if those two mini LP CD releases are released by Virgin Japan, then what mastering do they use?
