Sean Lennon and James McCartney have teamed up to record and release a track. Will it wow the many fans of their dads? https://consequence.net/2024/04/lennon-mccartney-primose-hill/amp/
Without actually paying attention to the lyrics I think the song is pleasant enough but not particularly memorable. It’s not embarrassing or anything near that criticism though, IMO.
There was I thinking that I'd beaten the informed insiders to the punch! I guess there is no need for this thread
It is nowhere close to Elliott Smith's best work, or even his less brilliant work. It is melodically flat and tonally unadventurous. As others have said - nice, pleasant, innocuous. It's background music.
Did I say it’s as good?? I said an Elliot Smith outtake, implying a song he didn’t put out. Yes, I agree on your thoughts on his music, by the way.
Ha, fair enough. If New Moon is the yardstick then I'd rate Primrose Hill pretty low down the tracklisting...
From The New York Times. Good quote from Zak. Sons of Paul McCartney and John Lennon Release New Song
Thank you for posting OP! I did listen, several times in fact. My thoughts are that this song is really not very good. Not bad, but not good. I rate it as a 1.5/5 at my most generous, on a very good/happy day. What I would really, really like is for Julian Lennon to go all in. Sit down, spend some time and write a buck load of songs. Then get a quality producer that knows what is truly expected of a Julian Lennon album. And those results should definitely not have every single song sound exactly the same. Julian has a successful track record/template forged when his started his musical career. Honestly it is not rocket science here. I could easily produce him myself.
Sadly James hasn't inherited his Dad's gifts as Julian did. Comparing James to Julian is like comparing Ringo to John. Still it's nice that James and Sean are working together. Sean is gifted as well but in a different way to Julian.
That’s not really in question. I was talking about Zak’s success in the industry compared to Julian’s success in the industry. Zak’s contribution to The Who, compared to some other hired gun’s contribution to the Who, is moot.
A bit underwhelmed here although I didn't hate it. Pleasant but lacks anything memorable. Read some (purely) speculation about Dani and Zak joining James and Sean. That has the potential to be really interesting, especially if they were to get mentoring from Paul and Ringo. I'll chalk that one up to, probably never happen.
I'd much rather listen to "That Means A Lot." I finally tried "Primrose Hill", and it's aggressively bland. One of those songs you keep waiting to actually start, and then you're already at the end. I struggle to find *anything* to say about it, that's how bland it is.
The phrase "Depression on a Stick" mentioned a few posts above actually sounds like a more interesting song title and/or album title.....
That straight away reminds me of a band called Pantera, who released an album called "Far Beyond Driven" in 1994, and the original album cover was banned so they had to change it. I wouldn't recommend searching it, but if you do, just keep the phrase "Depression On A Stick" in mind, and.... good luck, I guess?..
