    Breaking News!

Keith Emerson and Greg Lake U.S. Tour Announced

Many American fans have expressed keen disappointment because they cannot make the UK reunion of Emerson Lake and Palmer. We are all looking forward to that event, and that first reunion of the band in more than a decade is the highlight of the coming summer.

Nonetheless, American fans will not be disappointed. There is a special treat in store as Greg and his writing and performing partner tour this April in what is billed as "An intimate evening with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, featuring the music of Emerson Lake and Palmer, the Nice and King Crimson."

This special "unplugged" and intimate two man show is unlike any the two have performed, solo or with others, and we eagerly look forward to meeting you there.

The tour begins in April and the following dates are already booked:

April 1, 2010 - Cleveland, OH - Lakewood Civic Auditorium
    April 2, 2010 - Glenside, PA - Keswick Theater
April 3, 2010 - Ridgefield, CT - Ridgefield Play House
    April 6, 2010 - Alexandria, VA - The Birchmere
April 8, 2010 - New York, NY - Nokia Theatre Times Square
April 9, 2010 - Westbury, NY - Theatre at Westbury
(More dates will be added soon)

I'll probably catch the NYC show, but I'm dissapointed it's not a full blown ELP tour.

    From the Ridgefield Playhouse website...

...KEITH EMERSON & GREG LAKE OF ELP: An initimate evening of "The Nice", "King Crimson" and "ELP", Music and Story Telling. The innovators of the progressive rock era, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake welcome you into the inner circle with an intimate evening of performing classic songs, telling stories and interacting with the audience!...

Sounds more like a library lecture than a concert.

This is...odd...Of the three of them, Palmer's the one I'd think would be in best shape to actually tour. Keith has serious hand problems, and Lake's voice is (or at least was) shot.

To my knowledge, Keith had surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (or whatever nerve problems he was having), and is back in business. Greg doesn't have the high end notes he had in the early 70s, but still has a terrific baritone.

What bothers me is: no drummer. As a drummer and huge Carl Palmer fan, I'd love to see a full-on reunion tour. But even if Carl has other commitments, a drummer who could play ELP stuff would be nice. I'm just not a fan of shows that go around the country without drummers. When I see "Unplugged," I unplug. :)

Maybe Neil Peart or Mike Portnoy could fill in!

I hope they come to Northern CA. I would love to hear an acoustic version of the song Trilogy!

Los Lobos is doing this sort of format tonight in NYC in fact, where they take questions from the audience and tell stories...not sure what this new concert format is all about really, but this sounds like a major snooze-o-rama of tiredness.

What do I need to see ELP again? I think its great that we'll get at least some reinterpretations of songs we've heard a million times before...they'll will have to put some thought in to this. Great news. And Greg sounded pretty good on that British tour a few years ago.

Haven't you guys read the worst drummers thread here? Carl supposedly stinks anyway! (according to some "experts" here at the Hoffman pages, LOL). He's tied up with asia, I presume. And always been my fav drummer.

I tried not to read that thread about worst drummers...
A shame he is working with Asia this year... but I think they're going to play a show in UK this summer... am I right?

    Nope.

Surgery was many years ago, and involved his ulnar nerve. It was unsuccessful, and his right hand has been impaired ever since.

It wasn't too many months ago that Keith announced his retirement from performing, citing the condition of his arm (hand) as the reason. Obviously he's changed his mind since then, but I doubt his arm/hand problems have suddenly cleared up after so many years.

This has been discussed quite a bit in these here forums, might be worth a search.

Actually Keith has performed several live dates over the past few years. In fact, he had a solo tour in place last summer. He had to cancel due to the hand problems flairing up. It actually surprises me that so soon after he decided he's OK to tour again. I mean, ELP music isn't exactly the easiest stuff to play, even if you slow it and de-tune it or whatever these oldies acts do nowadays!

I'm 21st Century Schizoid about this. It would be nice to see these guys in an intimate setting (especially considering I never saw them before) and hear new "interpretations" of their "classics", but no Carl Palmer? Sounds a bit...sedate.

Slightly related, has anyone heard the Nice reunion shows from a few years back? How was Emerson's playing on those?

I didn't say he hadn't been performing, I said his hand and arm problems weren't alleviated by the surgery.

I don't remember the exact timing, but right after that cancelled solo tour may have been when he announced his retirement. I too was surprised by how quickly he changed his mind.

    Info from a newsletter e-mail I received:

Rock and Roll Legends Keith Emerson and Greg Lake to tour USA

In an exclusive intimate evening of musical retrospective highlighting the iconic music of Emerson Lake and Palmer, the Nice and King Crimson.

The two man show with keyboard legend Keith Emerson and the famed voice and guitars of Greg Lake is an intimate "unplugged" prelude to the highly anticipated reunion of Emerson Lake and Palmer at the High Voltage Festival in July, 2010 in the UK. It is unlike any show either of the two have performed before, separately or with others.

The fabric of the show is the iconic music composed by Emerson and Lake throughout their careers and audiences can expect new perspectives as well as new arrangements of classic favorites as Keith and Greg relate the stories of their songs and discuss the compositions and people that influenced the celebrated music the two created with the progressive rock bands that went down in history as the super groups that began a rock and roll era: King Crimson , the Nice, and Emerson Lake and Palmer.

The show is completely new - the two have never performed together in this personal setting and audiences will be treated to an emotional perspective and a rare and personal insight into the music they love during an evening they won't forget, in an intimate theatrical setting far different from the theatrics of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Be nice, mate! My aunt loved C'est La Vie .The same aunt who liked the milquetoast music from all those Granddadpop singers from France BTW! I'll say this much about Works though, when they did pretentious ELP went 125% that way!?? Not halfway. And in any genre they did schmaltz, jazz fusion, acoustic guitar ballads and classical they went over the top. And they never had to proclaim " Then There Were Three!" Now they are two though......
