    Hello everyone,

It's time for our weekly Top 10 Chart from the past once again. This one goes back 21 years, to 1985. This one screams 80's to me. I find it to be a pretty good chart overall, though some will disagree. This is from Cash Box - please post any other charts from this time that you wish. As usual, please also vote for which song you feel is best, your favorite, etc. from this chart in the poll.

One of my desert island tracks. Absolutely love this song. Who could not like the Breakfast Club.

I'm SO excited!! I love the 80's music!!

I voted for Madonna's "Crazy For You" because that song brings back a ton of memories for me when I heard it on the dance floor!! :)

Only got #2 from this chart in my collection. I am familiar, however, with all the songs here.

"One Night In Bangkok." I'm serious. The rest of the chart doesn't really float my boat, which is unusual because I loved the '80s.

Simple Minds. That was the last 45 rpm I ever bought. Some turkeys on that chart, but better than what was out 10 years later IMO.

Very good year for Top 40 radio (perhaps the very last good year for radio), but oddly, this chart does not reflect it. There is lots of 1984 residue ("Axel F" particularly), and two of the more weaker singles by Wham! and Madonna. Spring of '85 was a bit weak overall, I guess. As much as I am a Power Station fan, I cannot deny the wonderful sounds of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" simply dominating Top 40 radio during the Memorial Day weekend of 1985. The song just SCREAMS putting the top down and heading out on the road. Well...rolling down the windows at the very least. ;)

Hey, when it was initialled played on radio, I thought "Don't You Forget About Me" was a new Billy Idol song. Ironically, Sir William would cover the song (quite effectively I might add), on his "Greatest Hits" CD from a few years back.

If I had to go with one, I'd go with "EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD" by Tears For Fears!

"DON’T YOU (Forget About Me)" is my second choice!

I voted for Smooth Operator - this was probably the last year that I listened to top 40 radio regularly. Here's the Canadian (CHUM Chart) countdown for the same week - predictably, the bottom 5 places are held by cancon acts (oh & # 9 too)

I think the college radio chart would be far more interesting as the 80's college radio set the stage for much of what is popular today. I bet the Simple Minds and Tears for Fears and maybe even Sade would be on there, too although Program Directors hated to see popular commercial songs played.

REM, Husker Du, Replacements, Minutemen and other legendary bands were in their prime in 1985.

I voted for Wham! and I'm not ashamed. Well, maybe I am, but I'm admitting it anyway.

Pretty good chart for 80s music, so I went with EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD - Tears For Fears. I also like 1, 3, 5, and 6.

Simple Minds is the best of a bad lot. Popular 80's music bores me. I liked the college/alternative scene better then. Let's Active rules!!!

I remember every one of those songs, but 20 years later, I couldn't vote for a single one. But I voted for TFF.

  23. Grant

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I can't vote. I like and have each and every one of these songs. Every #1's a winner!

  24. (Those 80s college radio guys are trying to hijack this thread!!!) :D

I voted for Madonna, but consider the Simple Minds and Tears for Fears songs excellent as well. I found 80s popular music fun to listen to, and there was a burst of creative energy that was refreshing after the stagnation of the late 70s (Disco Era...) ;)

My vote goes toward Some Like It Hot. Still knocks me out 21 years later.
