capitol beatles box set vol. 2 - Continued (Part 2)

Hey, this has been a fascinating thread on many levels. I believe we need to wait & see which version is avalable in the stores on April 11th to determine if Brainwashed needs to sell his album.

It's also possible that they're both right. The only loser seems to be Capitol and they deserve credit for fixing the problem.

Wollensack ends up with a valuable & rare piece of history, Brainwashed keeps his mono album, Capitol sells bazillions and makes a profit - everybody's happy...and plans are made for vol #3 by Christmas.

Dunno about the bazzilions part. I don't see this as being a huge seller.

    Ok...sorry :)

So does this make the "incorrect" version a collector's piece now ? Are they going to send a recall letter to all the retail stores and make us wait longer ?

    Learned Forum Members,

I have tried to intimate all weekend what now is public knowledge. Let me just say that it is NOT a question of IF Capitol will do something but just exactly HOW to do it. As I understand it, and I could be wrong, it has already been fixed and is just a question of the BEST way to deal with it. That's why there has been the silence. It's NOT Capitol hoping no no one will notice. It's Capitol waiting until they have decided on a course of action definitively before they say anything.

You don't want to signal folks that you are turning left and then decide it's better to go right. :)

IF there is a Volume 3, these are the albums that Bruce Spizer will propose. Keep in mind that he said any Volume 3 would not be a 'continuation' but an odds and ends box.

Having said that, here is what he proposes:

    Yesterday and Today

    A Hard Day's Night

    Hey Jude

    The Hollwood Bowl

    Those will work too :)

However, why would they skip Magical Mystery Tour? It was compiled by Capitol and they had there own unique mixes on the lp. "SFF" had echo on it and was a different stereo mix, and side two had the duophonic tracks.
I'd be very surprised if they overlook that one. Bruce even told me in an email that it might have a chance in Vol. 3.

I would think "Hollywood Bowl" would be in the next volume if there is one, along with the other compilation lp's like R&R Music, Love Songs, and Rarities.

I understand what you're saying. I posted a message to that effect today---I have an original mono "Rubber Soul." There was a message saying that Capitol used to fold down "Duophonic" stereo versions to "mono." I just asked where....

Actually the US mono mix of "Michelle" is not the same as the UK mono, so that makes the mono RS all the more unique.

Its going to be interesting to see what pans out on the 11th when this set is 'officially' released in the US.
It sounds as if the cock-up with the 'reference mixes' (though why you would make a fold-down of a 2-track stereo as a reference for a genuine mono master mix baffles me?) has affected all of these pressings, as stated in the post above Wollensack has a 'real' issue of the set.

I wonder what kind of statement Capitol will make and how they will 'fix' the problem. Right away there is now another unique beatles pressing anomaly to join the many others from the past. How many of these will remain in circulation? Say you have to return your first pressing to get a copy of the re-pressing with the correction? Will some people keep the first version and buy another 'corrected' version??

Clearly Robert Lan has a set. Bought from HMV Japan, manufactured in the EU. So the 'wrong' pressing masters went far and wide.

Either way its going to cost Capitol a bundle!

At this point no one has any concrete information...it remains entirely possible that a single pressing plant made this error...it's also possible that Wollensack and Robert Lan got their sets from the same pressing plant. Hawkman, and a few others, say their sources at Capitol are aware of the mistake and will fix the problem... it's possible it's been fixed already. What's still odd is no one else seems to have received the set yet? No word on Beatles Yahoo Group or any number of music sites....except for a new member on Bootlegzone, who was so upset about the packaging he refused to listen to the music....ummm, not very credible. All we can do is wait a day or so, see what Capitol, or one of its representatives has to say...and take it from there. Ron

This is w/o a doubt, the STRANGEST way to hype a Beatle product, since........uh....."The Beatles Movie Medley"?

Is it possible only the EUR pressings got these bad masters ? I wonder if these were already shipped out to local retailers like Best Buy, Circuit City, Tower, Coconuts, Fye..etc....Will they have to ship the bad sets back and delay the release ?

If I happened to buy the error set, I would definitely hang onto it for collector's sake and buy a new "corrected" version". I wish there was a way to tell the difference (catalog number or bar code). I would just keep the error set sealed :)

Sorry to be a party pooper, but what makes people think that Capitol will destroy thousands of already manufactured/shipped copies just like that? Im sorry, I just dont see that happening. Will they recall thousands of Beatle product for an error that most people bying this set wont notice?
It this was indeed an error and something not done deliberately, my guess is Capitol will do a "secret" reissue with the proper version. My 2 cents: cancel your preorders and sit tight and wait. Unless you want to spend double and get a "rare" box with mono fold downs.

I know I wont be getting this on April 11 as I had planned. Im not bending over to Capitol.

No idea if only European pressings are effected. And no, the vast majority of US retailers won't be shipped until Saturday the 8th, or Monday the 10th. This is standard procedure. Wal-Mart, (also Costco's Sam's Club, and BJ's) sometimes receive earlier shipments being that they are so huge and not strictly music retailers. Since no one knows exactly what it is going on yet, it's too early to say if there will be any release delays. Ron

Yea I remember someone saying they got Vol. 1 at Wal-Mart the weekend before it was released.

I dont understand why they can have these at Beatlefest or any other place before the release date? Wouldn't Capitol be upset about that? I know if a store gets a Disney product (or any other I guess)like a new release dvd and are caught selling it early, they are no longer allowed to sell that company's product anymore. They are usually very strict about that stuff :shh:

I would love to see Hollywood Bowl in a 3rd box set...but what I would love more is to see that album "fleshed out" to include more (or all) of the songs from both year's shows, if it were possible...as an "official" release & addition to the worldwide catalog. I see a 2 disc "box set" with reproductions of the "Beatles USA Ltd" souvenier concert booklets & reproductions of the tickets themselves. Add in some pics & interviews with LA DJ's & other folks who were there. This could be a really cool sell, with a little imagination!

Not sure how I feel about A Hard Day's Night. The mono version is OK. I can't remember - what was the deal with the stereo? Wasn't it mono & they did something wonky to it?

As has been stated before, Yesterday & Today also presents a wonderful marketing opportunity that they will probably let pass. It's notoriety of the butcher cover should not be over-looked...but probably will be. C'mon Capitol! Get a little creative with this one!

Hey Jude...a US album for sure (yeah, not Capitol per se, but still valid) was only released in stereo. Like someone said (Sean?), what would REALLY be neat is to pair it up with a revised Rarities. (Hey - if they don't want to do MMT because it's part of the UK catalog now, they could add that US SFF mix to this!)

I could care less about the comps.

    Dexter
