    Best vinyl

    What's the best vinyl?

I used to have (got rid of all my LPs years ago) the Cream set
that came in a white box from Polydor in Germany.

But I see there's no shortage these days

Love the vinyl ... impossibly impractical these days though

Revisiting the P33W vs original master for Live Cream II: I'm pretty sure it's not the mastering on Those Were the Days. But I do think the P33W is a small improvement over the original. For the 1st one, I like the original better.

The Audacity/Excel EQ thing. Sleepy Time Time from Live Cream 1st:

20-20Khz, plotted log-wise just like we hear. P33W minus the original master. This one I think is easier to understand. Bass is boosted and the highs are indeed rolled off. Weird peaks in there. This is maybe the 10th time I've done this, and usually it's a simple smiley face, or just differences with the bass and high freqs.

Here's White Room from Vol II:

I have never seen something like this before. The bass is boosted, but other than that, the EQ differences between the two are all over the place. I'm almost wondering if this is something that would result from comparing 2 *different* masters vs the same master but just eq'ed differently? (Or, two different sources vs same source EQ'ed differently. But then why do the lower freqs look "OK"?)

I suppose in the end, personally, I'm happy with the original for Live Cream. But for the 2nd one, if I ever came across a P33W, I'd certainly buy it and do a lot more listening !

Just for comparison, if you go back not too far in this thread, the EQ differences are a little more benign here than what they did to the MFSL compared to the original masters.

I tell the difference the old fashioned way, by listening.

Even the best mastering job can only do so much, and it
wouldn't be one percent of what was going into the
    microphone in 1967.

    Most people do. :shh:

Note that post 71 comes before post 81.

Also please note that post 54 comes before post 56 for my MFSL comparison.

Jeez, I didn't know there was gonna be a test when I posted
    my comments.

All I know is that I've got the DCC Fresh Cream and Wheels Of
Fire, the MFSL Disraeli Gears, Goodbye and Live Cream 1 & 2.

And over 300 ROIO by Clapton. I'm listening to their Whiskey
A Go Go 1967 gig right now. I don't have time to read 80 posts.:goodie:

The RSO West German Goodbye is of MoFi quality.

I don't think almost anything can save Disraeli Gears. It was recorded badly and mixed badly.

    Hi,

Does anyone know if "Those Were The Days" (Boxed Set) has been repackaged? I wanted to pick a copy up, but although Amazon had the best price, it was listed with a 2008 release date.

    Many Thanks,
    Stephen

John Buchanan I'm just a headphone kind of fellow. Stax Sigma

Stephen, that's the import (?German, ?UK). I suggest you buy the 1997 set new from Amazon resellers. $35 is an excellent price.

This version also has the track Anyone for Tennis which is already on the DCC Wheels of Fire as a bonus.

That's the Drake. It's supposedly from master tapes. I find it nice but it has added reverb, iirc. Tonality is really solid and far better than the MFSL, IMO, but I'm not a fan of added reverb. I spin this one on vinyl.

Great CD. And no, it doesn't matter.

I thought Steve said that the master for the 'Goodbye' album wasn't found until the early/mid 90's?

Thanks. However, does it beat the original vinyl? :D:thumbsup:

Would you care to explain 'added reverb'.

I don't own the MFSL Goodbye yet, but from the samples that were posted on this site, I will prefer the MFSL of this title.

The Drake version of Goodbye says "Mastered From the Original Master Tapes by Dennis M Drake..."

    Right on the rear insert.

Given that other Drake masterings of the Cream catalog don't make this claim, I would find it strange if this were incorrect,. But tbh, I couldn't really care less. I don't like the added reverb, and I prefer this album on vinyl over any CD version I've heard.

Really Jeff? I'm glad you can't tell any difference and wish sometimes I couldn't. I've compared both and the UD was significantly better on my system.

@Taylan, I prefer the Polydor Japan P33W for Goodbye that beat the W. Germany Polydor and the MFSL Gold CD for myself in the SQ dept.
