@davidpoole On today’s YT video, Acoustic said about half of the Monk box sets have been sold. Jonathan also said that in May they will be releasing individual titles from the box. I assume they will be more expensive per record since they will come with full sleeves.
I will get it eventually. I tend to skip around in biographies of people that I am already very familiar with, reading random excerpts at each brief sitting (maybe repeating a passage). I have most of the books published about Billie. A friend of mine has an autographed copy of Lady Sings The Blues, which he acquired before the frenzy of investors started paying extreme prices for just about any autograph (he paid less than $100). My copy is in excellent condition, though not signed. This is not my copy (mine is cleaner, from an estate sale)
The Billy Taylor Trio: Music Keeps Us Young Billy Taylor, piano; Chip Jackson, bass; Steve Johns, drums. Recorded 1996 and released 1997. Notes by Ira Gitler. 50¢ find recently at my local library used book shop.
I just received this tonight and got to listen. Wow! Understatement: "cd 1 is great" True: "cd 2 is essential" Thanks again for the heads up!
Excellent LP. Mode Records was a shortlived label with great recordings from the 1957s I seem to remember. Havent heard the "stereo" version. Could be 'reprocessed'
Been listening a bit to Bird and Diz, working my way through some bebop. I was surprised that Miles Davis was on some of these Savoy sides. What else did Miles do prior to Birth of the Cool?
All anyone needs is the correct speed hybrid SACD issued by Columbia, but I have several versions myself.
Thanks. There’s a lot of music before signing onto Columbia. When you read through the lineups between Charlie Parker’s Savoy sessions and subsequently, Miles Davis’s Prestige Quintet… blows your mind. Nothing short of genius.
Duke Ellington - Duke's Big 4 - 2 LP 45rpm (Analogue Productions Fantasy 45 Series - 2003) Test Pressing
How is the soundtrack. I've heard most MJQ, but not this, and I don't see it streaming. If you have the Classic (that's my go to), then I'd expect UHQR using same plate to be mostly a marginal improvement. If you have surround playback capabilities, hearing that is noticeably different. Also the mono. I'm on the lookout for a late mono press (where they start to become affordable). There's also the Atmos mix streaming on Apple and Tidal, which I haven't heard yet. How cool to have Lady Day's autograph! Yes, still not sure. Though I enjoyed the stereo, and typically reprocessing I find jarring. My copy is beat so I'll eventually pick up mono and stereo. VSOP was a good label for reissuing those Mode west coast titles, and most can be found inexpensively. The Sonny Rollins Vanguard vinyl set shows as released yesterday, same as CD. Hmm. Are you seeing a delay? ---- NP: Paul Bley, NHØP – Paul Bley / NHØP (Steeplechase 1970s repress Denmark) One of the many NHOP duo albums on Steeplechase. I really like the duo format with a bassist, though has to be someone as creative as NHOP to really work. I played this last night and was ready to ditch it based on crackle and shrillness. This morning, it sounds great. Just goes to show how the biggest factor in the chain may be the listener. Totally unreliable and subjective. Though I've heard about systems that sounded different based on factors like the house electrics, static, etc. Doesn't seem credible. I expect a week of being on calls all day, my ears were fatigued, and I was cranky—ended up watching Argyle (fun movie) instead. Fresh on a Saturday morning, I'm able to immerse in the music.
