Argh, that always hurts. It was on again last night too....at midnight....I managed to grab it then, just as well! EG.
I am enjoying watching Diana Ross at the Royal Albert Hall 1973 on BBC2. Diana has released precious few dvds (let alone blu rays), so it's a treat to watch a vintage concert. I remember reading about this concert in an article in Record Collector magazine about 30 years ago where the writer said when he worked at the BBC he tried to persuade the powers that be to release this concert on video but his request fell on deaf ears.
I am catching up on a few things I have recorded on Sky Arts and BBC. Currently watching Emerson Lake and Palmer: Pictures at an Exhibition: Live at the Lyceum 1970, which was on Sky Arts a few weeks ago. Musically this is great but whoever decided to add psychedelic visual effects over the film should have been shot!
Tomorrow on BBC4 it's reggae, ska and 2-Tone night: 9:00pm - Terry Hall at the BBC 10:00pm - Rock Goes to College: The Specials (1979 performance). 10:45pm - Rudies Come Back: The Rise and Rise of 2-Tone - Arena documentary. 11:20pm - The Specials: 6 Music Sessions 11:55pm - 2-Tone: The Sound of Coventry 12:55am - Later with Jools Holland: Reggae and Ska
I gave up with "Jowls"Holland a few years ago. Far too many guests who were rubbish. His "Loved your CD" when he applauded their performance rang so false. You could tell he hadn't bothered listening to it. He always insisted on duetting with the occasional well know female singers. Because they often had different styles "they met somewhere in the middle," which was disaster as it was always under-rehearsed. Like this. It made me smile when I heard he was making an album with Rod Stewart. I'm not sure Rod's familiar with honky-tonk.
He does have some absolute rubbish on his shows nowadays. His hootanany on New Years has been awful for a few years now. I have given up watching him too.
Later... needs to be put out to grass sooner rather than later. It's had its day, and even then the appeal was limited. EG.
Ella Fitzgerald night on BBC2 tonight: 8:35pm - A Life in Ten Pictures 9:30pm - Ella Fitzgerald at the BBC 10:30pm - Ella Fitzgerald's Other Show (lice at Ronnie Scott's 1974, featuring a new introduction from Alan Yentob). 11:15pm - Ella Fitzgerald at Ronnie Scott's 1974 (no idea what the difference is with the previous programme!). 11:55pm - Oscar Peterson: Words and Music (featuring Ella). 12:45am - Ella Fitzgerald swings 2:30am - Ella Fitzgerald sings
Is "Pixie n Dixie" on tonite then, my sons?....never got on with Jinks... the lads drank with Daws Butler back at the Arms in St Ives Proper bloke...could WELL tuck inta the GnT's, Daws!
As a former member of Ronnie Scott's first club, I was going to say the same thing, but then I remembered he moved to the better premises than those I recall, in 1965.
Sky this afternoon screened the Peter Green tribute gig from a couple of years ago in full, surely on again imminently I imagine. No spoilers but it’s great!
The picture quality of the 1978 ELO concert was terrible, I was recording it but decided it wasn't worth it. I watched most of the Ella concerts on BBC, I've several of her albums that have remained unplayed for a few decades. But my opinion of her hasn't changed. I really like her slow standard ballads, but I 've never gone much on any uptempo songs she's sung.
The deluxe physical set of that show is a super bargain in the UK. 4LPs, 2CDs, BluRay in a big book for just £30 Mick Fleetwood & Friends Celebrate The Music Of Peter Green And The Early Years Of Fleetwood Mac - Super Deluxe Edition Box Set on Mick Fleetwood & Friends Official Online Store
The "Record On" episode of New Order's Power Corruption & Lies repeated tonight. It was okay, but not much on the actual album itself. EG.
Later jumped the shark for me when the Beeb shut TV Centre and he had to make it out in the sticks, iirc pretty much in his own back yard.
I am currently watching Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen which was on Sky Arts last night. I have not watched this before. Some enjoyable performance footage but I am skipping through the backstage footage which I am finding quite boring!
A few things on tomorrow night: BBC3: 9:00pm - Blinded By the Light: a coming of age drama about a young Asian teenager who finds his own voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen. BBC4: 9:00pm - Marvin Gaye: Live at Montreux 1980 Sky Arts: 8:00pm - Paul Simon: Under African Skies (a 2011 concert in South Africa. I have seen clips of this in the 25th anniversary documentary about the Graceland album but not seen the full concert.
