When I think of off-key vocals in a good way, I immediately think of Ian Hunter.

When I think of them in a bad way- Anthony from the Chile Peppers.

That's the way I feel about that awful "Do Do Do" bridge in the middle of "Let's Spend The Night Together"!

"Iron Years", the Sound -- great song, but the bridge is too high for him to hit properly.

"Write To Your MP Today" and "The Well-Fed Point of View", McCarthy -- also both great, but a little off here and there.

A couple of tracks by the Razorcuts on the "Take The Subway To The Suburb" compilation (best things on it) -- not a great vocalist then, but by the time they put out full albums he was much better. Maybe they just had more time in the studio ...

  4. It's common knowledge that Peter Tork had problems with pitch when he was with the Monkees, but I never hear anyone mention Micky Dolenz. Don't get me wrong, I like the Monkees a lot, and Micky was a great pop singer, but it seems that the higher he tried to sing, the flatter he got. There are many spots, but the one that springs immediately to mind is Porpoise Song. That song is one of my all-time favorites, but man, it could've been even better. "Wanting to beeeee..."
Am I the only one to think this?

No you are not alone. Micky gets a little tense or a little pitchydog every now and then. I don't mind so much because of the sound. His worst offense would be Missing Links 2 "Do Not Ask For Love" (I shall not be thy refuge once moooooooooooorree). That's the only time I wish he'd had a re-take.

Exene from X always seemed off key taken on her own but harmonizing with John Doe it didnt seem as much offkey as discordant harmonies, which was definitely part of their sound and I wouldnt have it any other way.

Not to pick on the Stones ( well, maybe I am). What about the last line of "The Singer Not The Song"? Interesting use of boy soprano there.

Can't remember the name but one of the songs off of King Crimson's Larks Tongues in Aspic has some of the most terrible vocals I have ever heard on a commercially released CD.

Maybe it was the one with Greg Lake singing?

  9. Galaga King

Galaga King "Drive where the cops ain't"

"I Know What Boys Like" by the Waitresses has one of the most off-key, horrible female voices on record.

The opening "Ahhhhh...." on "Just a Little" by the Beau Brummels also comes to mind. Actually, most of the "ahhhhhs" on the record sound off-key.

I'm talking about Paul's harmony part. In the middle song his voice quits altogether!

Am I the first person to mention Dylan on I Believe In You?

I love playing that for friends just to watch their glasses shatter. :D

(And count me among the Silver Jews fans also!)

I didn't read this whole thread. Did anyone mention Cheryl Crow yet? "Strong Enough" if I have to be specific.

Give me those few notes on the guitar, answered by some thundering bass and a couple of drum beats, and brace yourself before he belts out B-AAAA-B-YEE!

Topped in the best possible way.

John Lennon "Cold Turkey" especially at the end, when he sounds like
he is in a withdrawal fit.
