"Fly Like an Eagle: 30th Anniversary Edition [CD/DVD]" (1976 album; remastered, with three bonus tracks). Release date: 6/27

I hardly doubt this will be an improvement.... :shake:

Bonus tracks: an early, bluesy demo of "Fly Like an Eagle," recorded in 1973; a slower "Rock'n Me," and an acoustic version of "Take the Money and Run" sung over an early version of "The Joker." The DVD features a September 2005 concert with George Thorogood and Joe Satriani at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Calif.

“With the Surround Sound mix, people will finally hear the album the way I originally intended it to be heard,” says Miller, noting that it was originally recorded for quadraphonic sound systems. The DVD also contains an exclusive interview with Miller on the making of the record and a two-hour concert.

Filmed in September 2005 at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA, the concert footage was taken straight from the live recording made for the giant screen close-ups the night of the show. The result is an undoctored snapshot of the current day Steve Miller Band. Highlights include a 20-minute version of “Fly Like An Eagle” with guest guitarist Joe Satriani and appearances by George Thorogood, Paraguayan gypsy fiddler/harpist Carlos Reyes and classical composer Nolan Gasser, who accompanied Miller on piano for the Nat King Cole classic “Nature Boy.”

Had this ever been released in quad before?

I may have to dust off a couple of my old black-light posters when this dvd comes out.

  7. My DTS disc has the quad mix on it, it's different to say the least.

I know! Take The Money and Run is so different structurally. It fades during that jangly solo strumming part, and the chorus doesn't come back. It's all over the place. I always wondered, but assumed that the stereo was edited considerably? Either way, it seems like a bizarre way to end a song.

So....should I get rid of my DCC CD and original vinyl when this comes out? :tsk:

Must be a double-layer DVD to fit the surround mix (assume it's dvd-audio) and the concert recordings on the same disk. Hopefully Capitol will do a bunch of these. How about Dreamboat Annie?

If it is indeed the quad mix (and fingers crossed it's presented in DVD-Audio) it'll be interesting to see if they use the same quad master that the DTS disc used, which was prepared for quad 8-track tapes. If I remember correctly one or two of the songs had early fades and the first track, a synth intro thing, is considerably shorter as well. Hopefully this new version will fix some of these problems..

this is one of my fave quad 8 tracks. Great sound, IMO.
It does have a shortened beginning (does the DTS?) which I hope can be fixed in this new remaster. A very involving surround mix. The Joker is awesome in quad too. Capitol never released quad lps, just 8-tracks.

I have DCC SM's Greatest Hits and for "Fly Like An Eagle" I'll hold on to my Atomic Mercury!

Was "Fly Like An Eagle" actually released in quad in the 70s ?

I thought the DTS release was the first time it was released on surround.
I'm not sure why I thought that...

I know I was very disappointed with the DTS cd. The "space intro"
from the album is missing... and that immediately put me in the
wrong mood when I played it.

I didn't consider that it may have been an artifact from an 8 track version,
I just assumed it was a dumb mistake - similar to the missing notes at the
beginning of McCartney's "Band On The Run" DTS disc.

Some of the DTS cds I really like (the McCartney discs, the Allmans
Live at The Fillmore, Clapton, etc)... but I was seriously disappointed
    with the Steve Miller disc.

Other than the missing space intro, what would you say was disappointing?

I remember thinking it was very obvious that it wasn't a DVD-A...

The sound just seemed "thin" to me - and I was expecting "fat"...

The other DTS discs I mentioned, I didn't feel that they suffered too
much from their "DTS-ness"... this one did.

It might have been the mix as well. All of the other DTS discs I like
are hard-core quad mixes... with aggressive use of four speakers.

I don't remember this one having that.

The price didn't help also. For some reason Best Buy was selling
the Steve Miller DTS disc (and some other DTS discs) for approx
$25 per disc - when they were sitting right next to DVD-A and SACD
discs that were much cheaper (approx $15)

I think "Fly Like An Eagle" was remastered in 1999 and like everything else in that reissue seires from Capitol sonically sucked.

Actually Grank Funk's "We're An American Band" CD wasn't too bad, avoid the reissue LP which although cool to look at sounds as charming as a mud pie.

I just popped it in my living room dvd player to see the audio options - it does, however, have the complete "Space Intro," so it appears to be a new mix. Will hear it later tonite and will post back my comparisons with the DTS Entertainment release (which is still available in some places).

    Cheers,
