trying to avoid a negative connotation like under-rated, i thought i would try 'under-appreciated".

i offer michael timmons of the cowboy junkies.

quite the player, very tasty and truly takes control of the band....compliments his sisters vocals nicely.

very under-recognized for his ability for sure.

For me it's Pete Townshend and Alex Lifeson.
Both great Guitarist that sort of get over showed by exceptional Bassists and Drummers

Thanks for correcting that so often misused "under-rated" term. Indeed, the guitarists that get mentioned in such posts are always rated highly by those who know them and are in no way under-rated. Under-appreciated is much more accurate. I haven't heard the Cowboy Junkies guitarist - I'll have to check him out. I really like the guitar playing I hear on the recordings of a band called Monograph. They were around in the late 90's. I see the band member names on Wikipedia but it's not clear which is the guitarist.

  9. To my personal taste, I'd say John Fahey, Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, Eddie Hazel, Ben Chasny, Derek Bailey, The Jesus Lizard's Duane Denison, and even Robert Fripp and Prince. Yes, that Prince.

Bernard Sumner - although that is on him and his gravitation to synths from the early 80s on.

I believe Phil Keaggy is under-appreciated. He’s an amazing player.

Martin Simpson is a wonderful artist and guitarist. I've seen him up close in a small club.

Ian Anderson - his acoustic guitar mastery in the early seventies was phenomenal
Barry "Byrd" Burton - electric, acoustic, steel, dobro; he was one of country rock's greats (Amazing Rhythm Aces)
George Terry - more than adequately carried "EC" most nights during the 74 tour when the former was hammered
Robbie Hoddinott - Kingfish axman extraordinaire
Toy Caldwell - Marshall Tucker lead guitarist; not just a country rocker, but equally great playing the blues
Danny Kirwan - what could have been...
