I am curious about what bonus stuff if any turns up on "Big Generator." Otherwise.... I'll stick to what I have already.

Even though I have practically all the 2002 Japanese HDCDs -- and I love 'em, generally speaking -- I ordered all these, too. Dammit.

I'm going to buy "9012Live the solos" because the original ATCO is too expensive for me. Brickwalled or not, i need that album.

I have the previous japanese HDCD 3-CD "Yessongs" and i like it more than the Gastwrit. Japanese version is trebly that's for sure, but i't hard to say is it brickwalled since the original album was pretty compressed in the first place.

I'd still like to see Yessongs remixed...

I guess there won't be any bonus tracks. My guess is that these will be identical to Rhino's or previous japanese versions.

Actually Yesshows could have easily been expanded with the two live tracks from Classic Yes comp.

This seems to be the biggest craze these days.....reissuing the entire back catalog of the big groups in the past 40 years. I guess the god groups are still hauling in more capital for the record industry than any of the new acts.;)

If you are referring to the 32XD Japanese pressing, it is identical to the original US.

The Japanese HDCD of BIG GENERATOR -- if that's what you're referring to -- is indeed a different mix from the U.S. version.

For Big Generator, I believe the 32XD was recently found to be different (and quite inferior, iirc) to the original US pressing, but someone else would have to confirm or link this.

I have not heard this but the HDCD's don't seem very popular 'round these here parts.

Interesting. I had both discs at one time and they had identical peak levels and sounded identical at the time to my ears.

The first US pressing of Big Generator was identical to the Japan 32XD. Somewhere along the line though, there was a US secret remaster which replaced the original mastering.

Which, afaik, is the case with nearly all 32XDs and their US counterparts, but looks like Yesstiles solved this above.

Wow this is huge news to me. I'm pretty sure my US copy was from the first US pressing.

Do you have any idea when this 'secret' remaster came out? Do you have the 'Secret' remaster CD?

So do you think if I bought a new copy of 'Big Generator' from Amazon, CD Universe etc and compared it to my US copy I would notice a difference if I A/B'd it to my older copy?

I must admit I'm intrigued by this as this is the first time I have heard anything about this 'secret' remaster.

Any other information you can provide would be greatly appreciated as I am a huge YES fan.

    Thanks

    Scott

Actually what happened was Japan released the Yes catalog for a third time in the early 90's (before the remasters) with AMCY catalog numbers and improved packaging. A few titles (Fragile, CTTE) were secretly remastered. Big Generator was one of these, and this mastering was subsequently used for all further US pressings. One way to tell if the US cd is the secret remaster is if it is a later Specialty pressing. For example, if the matrix code reads "SRC 15" as opposed to "SRC 04."

I've been meaning to do a listening comparison between the two masterings, but haven't got around to it yet. I do like BG better than 90125.

Do you mean SRC-05? That's what mine has and I bought it in 1987.

OK I want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. When Japan released the Yes catalog for a third time in the early 90's you said that a few titles (Fragile, CTTE) were secretly remastered. Now with regards to only 'Fragile' and 'CTTE' were those Japanese secret remasters only used for the Japanese releases or did the US use those Japanese for all further US pressings?

Now regarding 'Big Generator' I looked at the end of the matrix code and my copy says "SRC 02". So if I were to buy a new US copy today I'm assuming that the matrix code would be different and that the CD would use the Japanese secret remastering?

I'm just trying to clarify this as best as possible.

Do you think you could possibly due a quick A/B of 'Big Generator' using the older first US pressing and the newer(secret remaster) US pressing and let me know how they compare? It doesn't have to be anything very time consuming. Maybe just compare a few parts from a few tracks from both versions of 'Big Generator'.

If you found significant improvement I would go out and get another copy of 'Big Generator'.

I don't know if I had missed this as this is the first time I'm hearing about this and don't know if this had been previously discussed on another thread?

    Many Thanks

    Scott

Don't take this the wrong way by any means but I'm just curious.

Above you said that you've been meaning to do a listening comparison between the two masterings (old US BG release and the one that came out in the early 90's). So without doing a comparison how do you know for sure the newer US version of BG used the Japanese secret remastering?

I did a few searches on the forum and couldn't find any previous posts about the 90's US pressings using the Japanese 90's secret remaster for all subsequent US pressings.

I guess I find the whole thing a bit strange since I think something like this would have surfaced a while ago on the forum?

Anyway I'll probably just buy the new disc and compare it to mine since I bought mine in 1987. It's only around $8.00 for a new copy of BG so it's worth it to me to hear it for myself.

    Thanks

    Scott

I have these different versions of Big Generator on cd:

    Japan 32XD
    Japan 20P2
    Japan AMCY (early 90's)
    USA (SRC 01)
    USA (SRC 15)

The AMCY and the SRC 15 share the same mastering as proven by EAC, and the other three share a different mastering.
