Happy Birthday! Michael Stipe of R.E.M. turns 50 today (January 4, 2010).

Seems like yesterday that the news covered Mick in the Rolling Stones turning 50.

Now the frontman for "college rock" is turning 50 years old. How time flies.

He looks good for 50. Not sure about the hair or collar, though.

Wow. 50. Where did the time go? I still picture him as a young guy in those videos, which are now about 20 years old.

He's the youngest of the original band members, too - Buck is 54 and Mills and Berry are 52.

I was certainly a DiStiple in my younger years...love the run they had on IRS (less fond of the recent albums).

IIRC, Stipe mentions something in "Little America" about not being able to see himself at 30. Now, he's 50. Wow.

I saw Peter Buck playing in a bar with Robyn Hitchcock a few years back and it is hard to believe Buck had probably cracked the big five zero by that time.

Peter has had more work done than any of them. Stipe looks like he has had a minimum of work, and I actually prefer that my stars age gracefully, such as Dylan and Neil Young.

I saw Bruce on the Kennedy Center Honors and couldn't believe how aggressive he has gotten with the nips and tucks. The bald spot is gone, there wasn't a wrinkle in his forehead, the hair was dyed, eyes were done...he is teetering on overdoing it and maybe I'm in the minority but I'll take a bald, double-chinned, wrinkley, gray Neil Young anyday over the fake, expressionless, post-surgery look some of our heroes are sporting.

Happy Birthday, Michael. It's not the end of the world as you know it, and you look like you feel fine.

Boy, do I feel old myself.

I never thought that my teenage heroes would end up in Rolling Stones territory, but here we are.

Yeah... what's weird is my parents are only (or would be) a few years older than Stipe - which is something I never considered during my youth.

 

Stipe and I share the same birthday, so we grow old together (although I'm eight years behind him).
